Once Upon a Quinceanera Author explores Latina ritual

In her book Once Upon a QuinceaƱera, the Vermont-based author with Dominican Republic roots traces the ancient Aztec rite that has become an elaborate fiesta in the U.S., celebrating a Latina girl’s passage into womanhood on her 15th birthday.

In 2006, Alvarez took time from her position as a writer-in-residence at Middlebury College to traverse the country meeting 15-year-olds and their families. She attended “quinces” in such Hispanic communities as Cuban-American, Mexican-American and Central American. She witnessed the extravagant, “supersized” tradition: A quince often means a hall with a party planner, a limo and dinner for 100 or more. [articles]
